Local's Guide
Dining Like a Local
Gardiner offers a fantastic mix of mountain comfort food and refined bistro dining. Here are our hand-picked favorites, all just minutes from Yellowstone Riverside Cottages.
Breakfast: Start Your Day Right
- The Yellowstone Grill: The classic choice for a hearty, sit-down breakfast. Perfect for fueling up before a long day of wildlife spotting in the Lamar Valley.
Lunch: Quick & Fresh
- Eat Café: Known for fresh, high-quality ingredients. A great spot for a lighter lunch or a gourmet sandwich.
- Yellowstone Perk: The go-to for a quick caffeine fix and a tasty bite. Ideal if you're looking to grab-and-go on your way into the park.
Dinner: The Main Event
- Wonderland Café & Lodge: An absolute must. They offer a fantastic atmosphere and a sophisticated menu featuring local ingredients. (Try the Huckleberry lemonade!)
- Backcountry Bistro: A wonderful spot for a refined evening meal with a cozy, intimate mountain vibe.
Casual Eats & Pub Fare
- The Corral: If you’re craving the best burger in town, this is the place. A Gardiner staple since 1960.
- Yellowstone Mine: Looking for a cold beer and solid pub food? The unique "mine shaft" decor makes this a fun spot to wind down after a day of exploring.
Essential Logistics: Know Before You Go
Success in Yellowstone is all about the "prep." Here is our local's guide to navigating the park and our neighborhood like a pro.
- The "One-Block" Convenience: We are located within a 2-minute walk of Ridley's Gardiner Market (full-service grocery) and the nearest gas station. You can park your car at the cottage and grab everything you need for the day without fighting for a parking spot in town.
- The North Entrance Advantage: You are less than one mile from the Roosevelt Arch. This means you can beat the morning "gate rush" while other travelers are still driving in from miles away.
- Fuel Up & Pack a Picnic: Fill your tank in Gardiner and grab lunch supplies at Ridley's Gardiner Market. Gas stations and dining options inside the park are far apart and often have long lines; most guests find it much more enjoyable to eat at a scenic pull-out.
- Connectivity & Offline Maps: While we offer complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi, cell service drops to nearly zero once you pass through the Arch. Download the NPS App and save the Yellowstone map for offline use before you leave our driveway.
- Pack for Four Seasons: Even in July, mornings can be near freezing. Layering is key—always bring a fleece and a rain shell, even if the sun is shining at the cottage.
- Water & Altitude: Gardiner sits at over 5,000 feet. You’ll dehydrate faster than you realize. Fill up your reusable water bottles at the cottage before you head out; the mountain air is dry and the elevation is high!
Adventure & Relaxation
Whether you want to white-knuckle a rapid or soak in a natural mineral pool, Gardiner is the ultimate playground. Here are our favorite ways to experience the landscape:
Whitewater Rafting & Scenic Floats
- Flying Pig Adventure Co.: Located just steps away, they offer everything from high-adrenaline whitewater to gentle scenic floats. Great for families.
- Montana Whitewater: A local staple for over 30 years. If you’re looking for a "Zip n' Dip" (ziplining + rafting), they are your go-to.
World-Class Fly Fishing
- Yellowstone Fly Fishing Co.: Whether you’re a pro or holding a rod for the first time, their guides know every secret hole in the Yellowstone and Gardner rivers.
- Yellowstone River Outfitters: Fantastic for walk-and-wade trips if you want to get deep into the park's pristine backcountry waters.
The Ultimate Soak
- Yellowstone Hot Springs: Located just 8 miles north of town. It’s the perfect way to soothe your muscles after a long hike. Insider Tip: Go at sunset for incredible views of the mountains while you soak.
Guided Wildlife Tours
- Yellowstone Wild Tours: Don’t want to drive? Let the pros take you into the Lamar Valley. They bring the high-end spotting scopes and the deep knowledge to help you find wolves and bears.
